| Regulations : European Union |
At present, there are no specific regulations dealing with micro-organisms. EU members hold different views concerning the status of micro-organisms and their use in foods. Some countries consider them to be ingredients, whereby they appear within the ingredient inventory of the finished product. Others consider micro-organisms to be processing aids and thus need not be labelled in the finished food stuff. Without harmonized legislation concerning food ingredients and processing aids in the EU , it is the opinion of EFFCA members that such differences will continue to exist. EFFCA supports a harmonised position on the use of micro-organisms in foods.
